A lipstick a day, week 1

I haven't really written anything in a long time but I set myself a new challenge and I wanted to share.

If you are reading this I am sure you know that I love makeup and have a fairly good sized collection of products. I realized though that I only really wear lipstick when we go to club and that seems like a damn shame given how many lip products that I have and that rarely, if ever get used.

So to encourage myself to actually use these products that I have collected, I set myself a challege to use a different lip product every day, Monday thru Friday, and to write mini reviews on each product, throwing out any that I don't like or that don't look good on me. I am also trying to take a photo of myself wearing the products so I can use those with my review. I am going to use a star system on a scale of 1-5, with 1 = terrible and I threw it out to a 5 = will buy again

My goal is to do a new entry every Sunday evening with the previous weeks products and reviews. Hopefully by blogging it, I will actually stick to it!

Onto the first week's worth of products!

Monday 11/6/17
MAC Lipstick in Hang up
Cost - around $18.00

Love this lipstick so much,  I've replaced it at least 2 times. Super creamy, wears really well, excellent plummy color and it reapplies well. I don't think they make this color anymore so I am glad I still have about 1/2 a tube left because I love this one. I think my only complaint is that it can sometimes get a little bit dry feeling as it wears and I can't stand dry lips.

Bottom line - good formula, goes on creamy, nice amount of pigment, very wearable with a nice sheen to it

4 stars

Tuesday 11/7/17
Wet and Wild Liquid Catsuit in Goth Topic
Cost -around $4.00
I try to love the long wearing liquid lipsticks, I really do but this one is just not for me. It went on smooth enough and was fairly comfortable but the color was kind of patchy and uneven and after about 3 hours my lips looked so dry that I just couldn't take it anymore. I tried putting a light layer of chapstick over it to try and make it look less dry and to make it feel a little bit more comfortable but I just did not like this one. I ended up taking it off after about 4 hours and threw it away when I got home.

Bottom line - too dry, coverage too patchy, wore okay if you like dry lip products, color was pretty good, totally not for me

1 star

11/8/17
MAC - Dazzleglass in Extra Amps
Cost - around $17.00
MAC - High quality, high pigment and generally excellent products but the Lipglass and Dazzleglass aren't for everyone. They have a super sticky formula that I know drives some people nuts. I only use them once in awhile because the stickiness does get tiresome sometimes. Sometimes I want something with only a little bit of color but lots of shine or glitter, especially if I am wearing vibrant eyeshadow or I just want something a little lighter in color and this does the trick. Love the pinky color, love the amount of glitter, but not a huge fan of lack of slip and the sticky feeling. Won't stop me from wearing it though.

Bottom line - sticky formula with good color/pigmentation and lots of glitter, not for everyone

3 stars

11/9/17
Revlon - Red Velvet
Cost - around $8.00

I had a picture of this one but I must have deleted it! It's a matte red that in the tube looks like it would work for me but once I put it on I knew immediately that it most definitely wasn't a good color for me. It made my teeth look extra yellow and as it wore, it turned pretty orangey which is most definitely not a good color on me. The texture wasn't bad for a matte lipstick and I do love Revlon lipsticks, this just isn't the one for me. This one also went in the trash.

Bottom line - not a bad formula but a terrible color for me and I'm not a huge fan of the matte finish on this product

1 star

11/10/17
Maybelline - Red Revival
Cost - around $9.00
Hands down, one of my favorite reds, especially among the drugstore brands. This was actually one of the very first red lipsticks I ever bought! I used to never wear red lipstick because I thought I had too much red in my face and that it would make my teeth look too yellow. Turns out it was just that I needed to find the *right* red. I love the formula of this lipstick too. Super creamy, it goes on smooth and evenly and has the perfect amount of pigment. It's a great bright red with slight blue undertones that works really well on me especially when I have black hair. Definitely will buy more when I use this tube up.

Bottom line - love everything about this product, color, creaminess, application, wearability.

A quote a day for 2017 - XXIX

“Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristocratic forms. No government in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, government tends more and more to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class -- whether that class be hereditary royalty, oligarchs of financial empires, or entrenched bureaucracy.”

A quote a day for 2017 - XXVIII

“When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way. Their movements become headlong - faster and faster and faster. They put aside all thoughts of obstacles and forget the precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it's too late.”

A quote a day for 2017 - XXIV

"The mind can go either direction under stress - toward positive or toward negative; on or off. Think of it as a spectrum whose extremes are unconsciousness at the negative end and hyperconsciousness at the positive end.
The way the mind will lean under stress is strongly influenced by training."

A quote a day for 2017 - XIX

A quote a day for 2017- XVIII

Today its not just a quote, it's song lyrics. Seems appropriate as we head into Inauguration Day.

I must've dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
They're moving into the street.

Now did you read the news today
They say the danger's gone away
But I can see the fire's still alight
There burning into the night.

There's too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can't you see
This is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

Ooh Superman where are you now
When everything's gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.

This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But there's not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

I remember long ago -
Ooh when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago -

I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We're not just making promises
That we know, we'll never keep.

Too many men
There's too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can't you see
This is a land of confusion.

Now this is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth fighting for.

This is the world we live in
And these are the names we're given
Stand up and let's start showing
Just where our lives are going to.

A quote a day for 2017 - Inauguration Day - XX

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

If the people cannot trust their government to do the job for which it exists - to protect them and to promote their common welfare - all else is lost.

There's not a liberal America and a conservative America - there's the United States of America.

Barack Obama

Today is Inauguration Day. All I am saying about that is that I will greatly miss the Obama family and the style, grace, and respect that they brought to the White House over the last 8 years. I didn't agree with everything he did or said (I'd argue that it's impossible to have an elected official that you agree with 100% of the time) but he was the first president that I genuinely felt an sense of pride for. His sense of humor in light of all the pressures of his office, his obvious love for his family, his willingness to do what he felt was right even when it may not have been the best thing to do politically. Michele showed little girls everywhere that you can be smart, fierce, stunning, and badass. Again, not perfect, they are just people after all but I will miss them greatly. I will always appreciate what they did for their country.

For real, thanks Obama. You will be missed in that office.

A quote a day for 2017 - XVII

“I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our more stupid melancholy propensities, for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one’s very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?”

A quote a day for 2017, XVI

seemed appropriate given what is coming up in a couple of days....

In honor of a good man - Martin Luther King, Jr

He wasn't a perfect man but he was a great man, a brave man, a wise man. A man who genuinely cared about people and our place in the world. He fought against injustice and wasn't afraid to speak up when he saw injustice and worse, the inaction of other people. He's been one of my heroes since childhood. His strength, his eloquence, his willingness to stand up and fight for what is right. Equal rights for ALL people, regardless of color. We should all learn from his example. Now, in this time of strife and division, his message is still just as relevant as it was then.

The world is a far better place for having had him in it.

A quote a day for 2017- II

“The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled,
as if you had never wasted or misapplied
a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour
if you choose.”

2016 reading challenge wrap up and 2017 goals

For 2016 my goal was to read 100 books and at the time I set it, I knew it was a pretty ambitious goal but I thought it was worth a shot. I didn't meet my goal or even get halfway there but I still feel pretty good about my results.
2016 totals
I read 33 books
or
14,038 pages
I love that I can see the number of pages along with the number of books on Goodreads, because it helped me really understand how much I actually read in 2016. I mean, 33 didn't feel like a lot of books but when I looked at my actual page count and did the math, it showed me that I read about 38 pages a day which isn't too shabby in my mind. Here are a couple of cool graphics from Goodreads that showed me some neat information about my reading habits in 2016

One thing I didn't realize until it was too late was that if I re-read a book from years past, I had to actually change the read date in Goodreads in order for it to count towards my reading goal so at least I know that for 2017.

For 2017 my goal is to read 50 books. I feel like this is much more achievable right now than reading 100 books especially as I do tend to reach for books that have a pretty high page count.

Did you have a reading goal for 2016? Did you make it? What is your goal for 2017?

A quote a day for 2017 - I

“For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning."

― T.S. Eliot

I've decided to do a quote a day here pulling from various sources including literature, poetry, tv, film, interviews, music, whatever strikes my fancy.

Time to remember the power of a well turned phrase.
